Golf.com’s Josh Sens dropped by to check out the incarnation of a long-lost Alister MacKenzie golf course design. What was supposed to be his final project, the golf course design for El Boquerón® in Argentina was lost for decades after the Great Depression halted construction. Nearly 100 years later, its spirit is being revived at the 21 Golf Club in Jackson, South Carolina.
A Personal Passion Project
Driving the project is Wes Farrell, a successful attorney and son of celebrated songwriter Wes Farrell. Along with the architectural committee of Brian Zager, Eric Iverson and Connor Lewis, Farrell is creating a faithful interpretation of MacKenzie’s routing and design philosophy rather than an exact replica.
The MacKenzie Course will blend Golden Age character with modern championship length, featuring the rolling terrain ideal for MacKenzie’s strategic style.
More to Come at the 21 Golf Club
A second course called The Hammer, a match-play layout designed by King-Collins, is also planned. As the article highlights, the 21 Golf Club is a major addition to the rapidly growing golf scene in the region located just minutes away from Augusta National — one that golf history fans won’t want to miss.
